Description
  • Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery of Valmoissine at 500 meters above sea-level. This guarantees sunshine during the summer months whilst remaining cool at night and limits the possibility of spring frosts. The vineyard's southern exposure gives the grapes perfect maturity at the same time as the Grands Crus of Corton. The yield is small in order to ensure perfect maturity and concentration of the grapes, the factors that create the best quality wines. This results in an elegant wine with remarkable finesse.

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2017 - The News (UK) - December 2020 - "A lovely alternative"

There is no doubt that good red Burgundy is expensive and so Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2017, Louis Latour is a lovely alternative. The nose offers reds fruits and some savoury notes, followed by a silky palate with more dark fruits and ripe tannins and a lovely, elegant finish.

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2016 - Scottish Field - May 2020 - "One of the highlights for me"

Tasting it again this afternoon, it still impressed me with its mix of woodsmoke, raspberry and a touch of fruits-of-the-forest on the nose. The palate is more savoury, with crisp acidity and well-balanced tannins; altogether, a very tasty package. (Peter Ranscombe)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2016 - February 2020 - The Buyer - "Quite unique""Well worth checking out"

It is quite unique with its spicy, garriguey notes. (Peter Dean, UK)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2015 - Wine Review Online - September 2018 - 95/100

The 2015 Domaine de Valmoissine, a superb Pinot Noir, is likely their best ever. It could be a perfect storm of vine age, 25-plus years of experience with the area, and a near-perfect growing season that explains the resounding success of this wine. More fruit-focused than a typical red Burgundy, but without the weight or sweetness that characterize many California Pinot Noirs, it still manages to capture the all-to-elusive savory quality often lacking in Pinot Noir-based wines from outside of Burgundy. Although not a red Burgundy, despite being made from the grape of that region, it does have what I consider a hallmark of red Burgundy--fl avor without weight. The tannins are suave, which allows for immediate enjoyment. (By Michael Apstein)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2014 - Wine Spectator - Web Only

Light-bodied, with modest rhubarb and mulled cherry notes, lined with a sous-bois hint on the finish. Drink now.

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2013 - Sunday Times - "Velvety"

An easy-drinking, velvety pinot noir, with bright, light smoothness. Enticing red fruit and spice abound on the nose. (By Will Lyons, UK)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2013 - Yorkshire Post - "Excellent value"

Excellent value 100 per cent Pinot Noir made by Burgundian negotiant Louis Latour. The grapes come from the hills of Provence, where Southern French sunshine is tempered by high altitude, producing a wine with ripe cherry and raspberry-laced fruit and velvety tannins. Pour this alongside roast Chicken, pink lamb cutlets or duck. (Christine Austin, UK)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2012 - Anthony Gismondi - Mai 2015 - 84/100Fragrant ripe raspberry, cherry jam forest and wet moss notes open this pinot noir, from negotiant powerhouse Maison Louis Latour. Ripe raspberry and bing cherry lead the clipped palate, along with tight tannins and rhubarb tartness.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2012 - The Tumberland News - September 2014 - "A lovely blalance"

Here's an exception to the rule that there's no earthy pinot outside Burgundy, although it is made by Louis Latour, one of Burgundy's most famous negociant-growers. The grapes are sourced from the Var region near the south-eastern Meditteranean coast, at similar altitudes to Latour's vineyards in the Cote de Beaune. The nose is earth - not quite farmyard - but definitely earthy and the palate is a delight. There's a lovely balance of black cherry fruit and silky refined tannins. The wine isn't soft, its tannins caress the tongue teasingly. Medium bodied, elegant and satisfying with good length. A good choice with duck. By Julian Whittle (UK)

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2012 - Ham&High - September 2014 - "One of most enjoyable non Burgundian pinot noirs"Domaine de Valmoissine 2012 is one of the most enjoyable non Burgundian pinot noirs I've drunk recently - fragrant with cherry and berry fruit, elegant texture and long lasting flavour. It's a great southern achievement. By Liz Sagues (UK)
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2012 - Wine Anorak - August 2014 - 89/100

Louis Latour's venture in the south of France has yielding this fairly convincing Pinot. It has cherries, plums, spice and some grip. It's ripe with a savoury, spicy edge, and has a delicious plummy personality. By Jamie Goode (UK).

    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2012 - The Wine Gang - August 2014 - 88/100Burgundy's Louis Latour has long made wine in the Ardeche and Provence, and this juicy, uncomplicated but deliciously drinkable 2012 Pinot is a class act. Its pretty cherry fruit, silky texture and teasing background of herbs, mushroom and spice are authentically Pinot, with a fresh but full-flavoured finish. By Tom Cannavan (UK).
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2011 - Vinos y Viñedos - March 2013 - "A wonderfully balanced wine"The Domaine de Valmoissine 2011 has a lovely ruby red colour with garnet tints. It has an intense nose with aromas of Morello cherries. It is harmonious in the mouth with slightly young tannins which will soon become fine and sily-smooth. It is a wonderfully balanced wine. (Spain)
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2009 - The Guardian - November 2011 - "Wine of the week"This company with strong Burgundian roots makes fine wines in its home region. Its best-value wines, however, use Burgundian grape varieties in more southerly French locations such as the Ardèche (a complex chardonnay) or, in the case of this succulent, light red-berry-scented pinot noir, Provence. It comes at a very decent price for pinot. By David Williams (UK)
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2009 - My Wine Pal - October 2011 - "Elegant Pinot Noir"Medium garnet colour with a light mint and cherry nose. Medium body, dry with medium tannins. Cherries and strawberry flavours. This is an elegant (Pinot Noir) wine. By Mark Anthony (Canada).
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2009 - The Daily Telegraph - August 2011 - "Pretty and Uplifting" The vineyards aren't far from the craggy Gorge du Verdon high in Provence, and you can almost smell warm summer hillsides in the glass. Pretty, uplifting and scented like raspberries and cherries, this is consistently one of my favorite sub £10 pinot noirs. By Victoria Moore (UK).
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2008 - Cellarmarque - January 2010 - "Elegant Distinct Bouquet"This Louis Latour Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir has a marked colour-deeper than the low-yield 07 vintage. Aromas of red berry fruit with a light elegant distinct bouquet. Very soft on tannin and acidity, coupled with juicy fruit combine to make this 08 vintage very easy drinking now.
    • Pinot Noir Domaine de Valmoissine 2007 - jamie Goode's Wineanorak - April 2010 - 88/100From Provence, where Louis Latour have 85 hectares of vineyards planted on red clay with chalk at an altitude of 530-570 m. Sweet, berryish nose verging towards jammy. The palate is fresh, pure, fruity and berryish with some cherry notes. Delicious in a ripe style.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2007 - Cleveland.com (USA) - December 2009 - "Lovely and varied flavours"Light red in color, the wine has inviting aromas of red fruit, flowers and earth. Its bright fruit is smoky and tart, with a modest, sustained finish. The lovely and varied flavors make it ideal for accompaniment with the Christmas ham or turkey.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2007 - Wine Gang - September 2009 - 88/100This Pinot Noir from the Var has enticing freshness and definition, a floral perfume, raspberry and cherry fruit and a savoury, mineral element. Medium-bodied and well-balanced. Drink it slightly cool.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2007 - Joanna Simon on Wine and Food (UK) - August 2009 - "Cracking little Pinot Noir"This is a cracking little pinot noir for the money, made in the the Var (Provence) by Louis Latour of burgundy fame. It's medium-bodied, nicely shaped by gentle tannin and acidity and has convincing raspberry and cherry aromas together with some more savoury flavours.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2007 - Dallas News - August 5th 2009 - "Ripe and juicy everyday wine"If you love red wine but just can't bear the thought of a heavy wine in the warm summer weather, this is the wine for you. It's got ripe raspberry and cherry fruit with a touch of smoke, zingy acidity to keep it lively, and velvety tannins. It's made by the illustrious Burgundy house of Louis Latour, but the grapes come from a warmer region in Provence in southern France, the Coteaux de Verdon. So, we have the skill, artistry and exacting standards of a producer of some quite expensive wines applied to a ripe and juicy everyday wine. Lucky us. Enjoy with a light pasta, grilled salmon or as an aperitif.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2006 - Wine Spectator - 2009 - 85/100Light-weight, but with good grip nonetheless to the black cherry, briar and sweet earth notes. There's a nice rustic edge. Drink now.

    • 2006 Domaine de Valmoissine - The Seattle Times - USA - November 9th 2008 - Drinking "Sideways": World's best budget Pinot Noirs: This nicely-packaged wine from an obscure appellation — Vin de Pays de Coteaux du Verdon — brings a mix of Old World and New World strengths. Exceptional length and appealing, sweet fruit flavors of strawberry preserves and cherry candy. (Grape Expectations)
    • 2004 Domaine de Valmoissine - Decanter - October 2006 :Sweet, very perfumed aromatic nose. Raspberry, smoke, lovely complex aromas. Firm raspberry Pinot fruit. Juicy, elegant, ripe vegetation. Medium weight and lenght. Will evolve further.
    • 2003 Domaine de Valmoissine - Deliaonline - October 2006 :Louis Latour Pinot Noir de Valmoissine 2003 is an exceptionally light and smooth red. Deliciously fruity but delicate in style, this wine provides a perfect accompaniment to a variety of dishes - try it with Italian antipasti and tomato-based pasta dishes or simply enjoy it in its own.
    • 2003 Domaine de Valmoissine - La Revue du Vin de France - February 2006 :Light robe, quite developed. Clean bouquet, cherry notes, great fruit ripeness, crushed raspberry hints, and floral aromas. Round palate, suave, with tonus, bursting with fruits. Ends on a peppery thriving finale. Can be enjoyed as of now.
    • 2000 Domaine de Valmoissine - Washingtonpost.com - October 22nd, 2003 :With alluring smoky, woodsy aromatic notes, tender red fruit flavors, and magically soft, slippery texture.
    • 2000 Domaine de Valmoissine - Best Buy - Wine Enthusiast - August 2002 - 86 points :Smells like Pinot, with meaty plum and leshy black cherry aromas. Tastes like Pinot, with a supple texture and cola and black cherry flavors. Why can't more wineries turn out good Pinot at this price?
    • 2000 Domaine de Valmoissine - Observer Food Monthly - January 2003 :This forward, supple, full-bodied, starwberry fruity red, made by burgundian house Louis Latour in the souh of France, is ideal for Pinotphiles on a budget.
    • 2000 Domaine de Valmoissine - Wine International - August 2003 - 89 points :Louis Latour may be famous for Burgundies it produces close to its Côte d’Or base, but it is an old company that deserves credit for pioneering Chardonnays from the Mâconnais, Montagny and the Ardèche. Now it’s the turn of a Pinot Noir from Provence. The Domaine de Valmoissine 2000 is made in the hills of the little-known vin de pays area of Verdon. The combination of the 500m altitude and the plentiful Provençal sunlight make for a rich plummy, raspberryish and slightly spicy wine that would be at home in many a Burgundian or New World Pinot Noir. Great value.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine - Wine Magazine - April 1999 - 90 points :Domaine de Valmoissine, located on a limestone plateau 50 miles North of Saint-Tropez, is cooled by mistral winds. There are no restrictions on grape varieties in this vin de pays zone which was created in 1992. Louis Latour has picked up the experimental gauntlet and created this stunning Pinot Noir. A lovely plum and blackcurrant nose. The palate has a bitter cherry, farmyard feel with an edge of ripe red plums and rich spice. A good characterful wine.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine - New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia - Tom Stevenson. This stunning wine is easily the greatest vin de pays Pinot Noir ever produced. It could be the greatest vin de pays that has ever been produced from any grape variety, but it is not possible or fair to compare wines of totally different grapes and styles and say which is best. I am certain, however, that it is the most exciting vin de pays I have ever tasted. It is so soft and silky, with such a purity of fruit and so much finesse that few Burgundians would believe this is not a Burgundy, and a fine one at that. Its not cheap for a vin de pays, but it is better than many Burgundies twice its price.
    • 1998 Domaine de Valmoissine - Wine Magazine - August 2000 :Lots of farmyard fruit with a sweet, balanced palate and good length. This wine has a ripe character, which is light and pleasant and has good length.
    • 1995 Domaine de Valmoissine - The Wine - April 1999 :A lovely plum and blackcurrant nose. The palate has a bitter cherry, farinyard feel with an edge of ripe red plums and rich spice. A good characterful wine, described Chris.
    • 1995 Domaine de Valmoissine - Decanter - July 1998 :Smokey, chocolatey aromas of medium intensity following onto the palate.
    • Domaine de Valmoissine - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:Tastes like Pinot, a supple texture and black cherry flavours. Why can't more winerie turn out good Pinot at this price?
    • Domaine de Valmoissine 2013 - Manchester News - "A real delight"

This Burgundian style pinot noir seems even more of a magic trick that the Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir grapes were grown near Aups, a village in the Haut Var of mountainous Provence. It's quite simply the best Pinot I've tasted from a region as far south in France as this. The 500m altitude obviously helps, making for a slow maturation of the fruit, essential with Pinot. Without that slow development, it can be leafy and sweetish. This wine has savory cherries on the nose with a hint of wild herbs. The palate is ripe, soft and subtle, but the voluptuous fruit is brought back into shape by keen acidity. A real delight. (By Andy Cronshaw, UK)
