Description
  • The Mazis-Chambertin is just next to the Chambertin, at the heart of the constellation of Grands Crus from Côte de Nuits. There used to be an ancient hamlet which disappeared around the Middle Ages: in ancient french, 'Mazis' meant 'country houses'. It is an extraordinary red wine, powerful and complex. A wine just waiting to blossom.
Vinification & Ageing
  • Fermentation
Traditional in open vats, complete malolactic fermentation.
  • Ageing
10 to 12 months ageing in oak barrels, 100% new.
  • Barrels
Louis Latour cooperage, French oak, medium toasted.
Wine tasting
  • Tasting Note
This red has intense aromas of wild black berries with musk and woodbox undertones. It is powerful yet unctuous, thus revealing its harmonious character. To be layed down for 10-12 years.
  • Food Pairing
Venison stew - roasted deer with pepper and mashed celery - mature cheeses.

Press review
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 - Wine Spectator - October 2013 - 90/100A solid kernel of cherry at the center of this elegant red. Spice and animal notes complete the flavor spectrum, with dusty tannins on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2027.
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 - Burghound.com - April 2010 - 89-92/100This is very Mazis with its distinctly sauvage element infusing the cool and relatively airy red berry fruit and earth nose that also displays a hint of dried meat that introduces vibrant and relatively finely detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess good punch and length on the mineral-driven finish. 2022+. By Allen Meadows (USA).
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 - Jancis Robinson - 2010 - 17.5/20 Big and smooth and palate-filling. Some energy. Racy and satisfying. Lip smacking, even. Very refreshing and no ersatz sweetness. Drink 2012-2019 (UK)
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2008 - The World of Fine Wine - March 2010 - 17/20Medium deep ruby. Reminiscent of a top Northern Rhône, as marketing director Bruno Pépin remarks; soft strawberry, licorice, and spice. Dense and very silken in texture, elegant and harmonious; still to fan out, but the length and succulence suggest that it will. By Neil Beckett, UK.
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2007 - Wine Spectator Insider - February 3rd, 2010 - 93/100Finesse and inner strength mark this intense red, which is packed with cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors, with accents of tobacco and spice. There's a long, palate-saturating finish. Best from 2014 through 2027. By Bruce Sanderson (USA).
    • Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 - Burghound.com - April 2008 - 90/100Discreet if not invisible wood highlights a distinctly animale character to the mostly red berry fruit nose that is followed by rich, full, sweet and impressively voluminous flavors that are firmly, though not aggressively, structured and offer solid if not spectacular persistence. This is supple and delicious and somewhat more forward relative to what one might typically expect from a young Mazis. 2013+. By Allen Meadows (USA).
